The tenth edition of the Funding Atlas of the German Research Foundation (DFG) has been published. It illustrates the consistently high level of research performance at the University of Freiburg. During the reporting period 2020-2022, researchers at the University of Freiburg acquired a total of 287.8 million euros in DFG funding. This puts the University of Freiburg in 8th place out of 229 universities.

“It is not only the absolute number that is impressive. Excellent results in the life sciences and other scientific fields

The University of Freiburg performed particularly well in the life sciences. It came in second in both absolute terms, with a total of €173.2 million in funding, and in relative terms, based on the number of professors. In addition, the DFG Funding Atlas shows that the University of Freiburg is ranked in the top 10 in many other areas, both at the university level and at the level of scientific disciplines.

About the DFG Funding Atlas

The DFG Funding Atlas, a long-established reference work, has been providing reliable overviews of publicly funded research in Germany since 1997. Every three years, the DFG Funding Atlas provides comprehensive and subject-specific analyses of how successful German universities and research institutions have been in acquiring third-party funding from the DFG. The DFG Funding Atlas also contains detailed analysis of funding provided by the federal government and the European Union.
