“Diversity and equity are prerequisites for research excellence“

Freiburg, 13/05/2025

A statement by Prof. Dr. Sylvia Paletschek, Vice Rector for University Culture at the University of Freiburg.

The recently published discussion paper by the Leopoldina calls for a reduction in bureaucracy in the academic system and presents activities in the areas of equity and diversity as mere secondary tasks that academic institutions should undertake voluntarily. The paper has led to nationwide concern and criticism among members of rectorates and presidencies dealing with equity and diversity.

For the University of Freiburg, diversity and equity are part of its identity as a cosmopolitan university, as expressly emphasised in its mission statement. We combine quality in studies, teaching, research and administration with responsibility for science, society and the environment. For us, diversity and equity are prerequisites for the research excellence that characterises the University of Freiburg.

Science thrives on a wealth of perspectives and the power of new ideas. In order to fully develop these, targeted measures to promote diversity and equity are needed. Only in this way can we ensure that all talents can develop their full potential regardless of their origin, gender, social background or other diversity characteristics.

A culture of diversity for greater social cohesion

At a university such as Freiburg, with many international students and staff, promoting diversity is an expression of our academic culture. It is also crucial to our mission of preparing students for an increasingly complex and diverse society. We are convinced that a culture of diversity strengthens social cohesion.

It would be a mistake to dismiss diversity, equity and inclusion measures as bureaucratic burdens. They make a significant contribution to creating fair and transparent structures and eliminating discrimination – tasks that are indispensable in a democratic society and a pluralistic academic system. The rule of law and academic freedom, which we rightly uphold, are based on rules that guarantee protection and participation.

Of course, bureaucratic processes must be reviewed and streamlined where appropriate. However, blanket cuts to bureaucracy at the expense of diversity and fairness jeopardise the very foundations of science. The University of Freiburg therefore stands firmly behind its representatives, programmes and initiatives that promote diversity and equal opportunities. They are an expression of our commitment to excellence, openness and social responsibility – to a free, fair and sustainable university.
