The affected volumes are currently not available for loan. The mould infestation was discovered at a very early stage. Immediate measures for protection and cleaning are in progress. There is no health risk.
Some of the book holdings in the underground stacks of the University Library have been affected by mould. Immediately after the first mould was discovered, the University of Freiburg, together with the State of Baden-Württemberg as the owner of the building, launched extensive testing, protection and cleaning measures. There is no health risk for library users and staff. Thanks to careful monitoring by library staff, the mould infestation was discovered at a very early stage.
Around three million volumes are stored in the approximately 13,000 square metres of the underground stacks. The exact number of affected volumes has not yet been determined. According to current estimates, it is in the low to mid single-digit percentage range. Books with fabric covers are particularly affected, in some cases also leather covers or slipcases. All books showing mould growth will be immediately blocked from lending and will not be used. The underground stacks are used to store older or particularly sensitive University Library holdings. The most valuable old holdings, such as medieval manuscripts or early prints, are not affected. They are stored in a separate vault with special security.
According to an initial assessment by experts, the mould infestation can be traced back to the room climate conditions in the underground stacks. These, in turn, are influenced by many different factors. Determining the exact cause is part of the ongoing measures. Improving the room climate conditions is crucial to prevent the mould from spreading further and damaging the holdings.
The University of Freiburg is carrying out all measures together with the State of Baden-Württemberg, with the help of relevant experts, including those with experience in preservation and issues with building physics. All measures are guided by the special requirements and conditions necessary for the preservation of library holdings.
The mould will be removed in accordance with applicable standards and safety regulations in order to prevent further damage to the books and to make them usable again. The restoration work will take some time. Current information on the topic will be published on an ongoing basis.
