In a national comparison, the University of Freiburg performs very well in the subjects of Geography (ranked 2nd-5th), Biomedical Engineering (ranked 3rd-8th) and Public Health (ranked 5th-6th).
The ‘ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2024’ includes 55 subjects from the natural, engineering, life, medical and social sciences, in which the University of Freiburg is represented in 28 disciplines. This year, the ranking includes more than 1,900 universities from 96 countries.
The ranking’s methodology has been adjusted compared to last year’s. The ranking is now based on nine instead of five indicators in five categories. The four newly introduced indicators, all of which are grouped in the category ‘World-Class Faculty’, include: international academic awards, being named a ‘Highly Cited Researcher’, serving as an editor-in-chief of international academic journals, and holding leadership positions in major international academic organisations in an academic field. The way the indicators are weighted varies across subjects.
The performance of the universities is also measured on the basis of the additional categories of ‘World-Class Output’, ‘High Quality Research’, ‘Research Impact’ and ‘International Collaboration’.
