The internationally renowned sociologist Prof. Dr. Sujata Patel has been honored with a Humboldt Research Award. She will conduct her associated research stay at the University of Freiburg, working with Freiburg-based sociologist Prof. Dr. Manuela Boatcă. Patel is a retired professor of sociology, having last served at the University of Hyderabad in India. Patel was the first Vice President of the National Associations of the International Sociological Association. Her research focuses on global and historical sociology, inequalities in knowledge production, urban spaces in India, and anti-colonial movements. Her current project, which she will also pursue in Freiburg, explores the diverse histories of anti-colonialism and their intersection with global social theories.

Global Social Theory

Manuela Boatcă, a professor of sociology at the University of Freiburg, specializes in historical-comparative sociology, theories of inequality, postcolonialism, gender sociology, and the study of violence. “I am delighted to collaborate with Sujata Patel here at the University of Freiburg,” said Boatcă. “Her research stay in Freiburg provides us with the opportunity to continue our joint work within the Research Committee on Historical Sociology of the International Sociological Association and to introduce Sujata Patel’s impressive contributions to global social theory to a broader German academic audience.”
