Freiburg, 05/02/2025
After the University’s withdrawal from the X platform, Bluesky and Mastodon will be further expanded as channels for University and scientific communications.
Since the beginning of February, the University of Freiburg has been active on the Bluesky social media platform with its topics from University and science communications. This expands its social media communication offerings and provides an alternative to communication on X, formerly Twitter, which the University had terminated in January.
Bluesky is a microblogging platform where users can post, share and comment on short messages, images and videos. Many people and organisations that left X, including scientists and universities, are now active on Bluesky. The platform is characterised by a differentiated exchange of content, respectful discourse and a transparent, user-friendly environment, which means it offers good conditions for University and science communications. Bluesky had around 25 million users worldwide at the end of 2024.
In addition to its presence on Bluesky, the University will also be increasingly represented on the Mastodon platform. Since June 2021, it has built up the second-highest number of followers among German universities on this platform.
If you are a member of the University of Freiburg and would like advice on how to use X or set up another professionally used social media account on Bluesky, Mastodon or other platforms, please feel free to contact socialmedia@zv.uni-freiburg.de. If you are already active on Bluesky or Mastodon, you are welcome to tag the University of Freiburg account in your profile or posts.
