The ‘World University Rankings by Subject 2025’ published by the British magazine Times Higher Education (THE) ranks the University of Freiburg among the top ten universities in Germany in six subject groups. In the international comparison, it is ranked twice among the top 100 universities and three times in the 101 to 125 range.
The THE World University Rankings by Subject 2025 includes a total of eleven subject group rankings. The University of Freiburg is ranked in nine of them. With a ranking of 70 in the life sciences and 80 in the arts and humanities, the University of Freiburg is among the top 100 universities worldwide in the respective subject rankings. In these subjects, it ranks sixth nationally.
In the fields of education, medicine and health sciences, and computer science, the University of Freiburg is ranked between 101 and 125 worldwide. It is ranked fifth nationally in education, sixth in medicine and health sciences, and ninth in computer science. The University of Freiburg also achieved a top 10 national ranking in engineering, coming in ninth place.
In line with the methodology of the THE World University Rankings, the subject-specific rankings of Times Higher Education are based on 18 indicators in the areas of teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry. The weighting of the individual indicators varies by subject group.
