Teaching

We teach our students leadership skills in sustainability issues by training them to become context-sensitive experts in the analysis and coordination of governance processes in different sectors.

One focus of the courses offered by the Chair of Environmental Governance is the English-language Master’s program “Environmental Governance” (MEG). In addition, we also contribute to the Master’s program “Environmental Sciences” as well as to the BSc programs “Forest Sciences” and “Environmental Sciences” and provide an introduction to the Master of Education in Biology.

Governance of Environment and Natural Resources

This module provides a comprehensive foundation of knowledge on the principles of sustainable development, along with an in-depth exploration of diverse approaches, strategies, and theories related to sustainability. Additionally, it emphasizes the pivotal role of governance in local, national, and international political spheres, along with a thorough examination of the opportunities and challenges associated with its operationalization and implementation. Examples from various sectors (climate, biodiversity, forests, water, energy, food, etc.) are used to present different approaches and instruments for managing the environment and natural resources based on the principles of the market, the state, and civil society.

Methods of Environmental Social Sciences

This module discusses methods of environmental and sustainability research from a social science perspective. The discussion cover different fundamental objectives and understandings of sustainability research, as well as the roles and contributions of the social sciences to understanding and addressing sustainability issues such as climate change and biodiversity loss. The objective of this module is threefold: to understand the logic of social science methods in the context of sustainability research, to familiarize participants with exemplary methods and combinations of methods, and to encourage reflection on their use.

Sustainable Regional Development, with a Focus on Rural Areas

Mandatory Master’s module, 5 ECTS,
Profile line Land Use and Nature Conservation in the MSc. Environmental Sciences [in German]

This module provides a comprehensive overview of the theories, concepts, and instruments of sustainable regional development and regional governance. It also covers the normative foundations of goal setting in the thematic fields of landscape, Heimat, and wilderness. The institutional and legal foundations of regional spatial planning, as well as the system of spatial planning in Germany, serve as the starting point. The module emphasizes conflicts of land use, such as the securing of raw materials through regional planning, and the balancing of social and economic demands on rural areas in line with their ecological functions. The importance of protected areas (e.g., national parks, nature parks, and biosphere reserves) and funding bodies (e.g., LEADER, PLENUM) in facilitating integrated rural development is demonstrated using practical examples.

System Thinking, Planning & Transitions

Master Core module 5 ECTS, MSc Environmental Governance / MSc Environmental Sciences, Profillinie Sustainability Assessments & Transitions

The module offers an introduction to systems thinking and systems analysis in the context of planning and governing sustainability transitions. Building on a short introduction to Complexity Sciences, the conceptual foundations of complex, adaptive systems are highlighted. In the following, various aspects such as control, analysis, modeling and design of social-ecological systems are discussed from a theoretical and applied perspective (conceptual approaches, theoretical underpinnings and methodologies). The module is completed by a workshop on system dynamics modeling / causal loop diagramming.

Research Design in Environmental Governance

The overall goal of this module is to introduce the logic of social scientific inquiry in environmental governance and to offer students an opportunity to practice skills required for designing and conducting research projects, including a Master’s thesis project.

Bachelor’s and Master’s Theses

Due to limited supervisory capacity, we are currently not actively offering any topics for Bachelor’s or Master’s theses.

However, students interested in writing a thesis at the Chair of Environmental Governance are invited to submit their own topic proposal at any time. In dialogue with the supervisor, a topic of your own choice can then be specified with reference to the research focus of the professorship. In such cases, students are requested to submit a preliminary research outline to heiner.schanz@envgov.uni-freiburg.de.
