Research
For more than 25 years I have analyzed, taught and advised on the area of natural resource policy and governance. My research interests include amongst others the areas international forest governance and bioeconomy with a focus on legitimacy, discourses, communication and integration. I have initiated and coordinated various research projects and published several scientific papers, chapters and edited volumes. Being the head of the Chair of Forest and Environmental Policy, I have the pleasure to supervise diverse research studies of PhD students bringing in different research perspectives. My active involvement in the International Union of Forest Research (IUFRO) has provided me with an international disciplinary and interdisciplinary network fostering collaboration with colleagues around the globe. Additionally, I have always worked in close dialogue with decision-makers and stakeholders at different political levels (from local to international), eager to develop new research that has not only scientific value but as well high practical relevance. Apart from that, I have been highly involved in research management and acted as Dean of the Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment and as Vice-President on Internationalization and Sustainability of the University of Freiburg.
Teaching
I am teaching in different undergraduate (BSc) courses dealing with Natural Resource Governance, including environmental and forest policy and governance as well as communication. Furthermore, I teach at the graduate level (MSc) diverse courses including a course on International Forest Governance. My problem-oriented teaching has been strongly influenced by trainings on higher education. One of my personal goals as a teacher is to help students develop their critical thinking skills.
As first and second supervisor I support a range of PhD students focusing on natural resource and environmental policy and governance, spanning different social scientific perspectives. Additionally, I am mentoring different scholars working on their habilitation project.
