JANUS Observation Strategy – Impact Craters and Ice Tectonics
Thomas Kenkmann and Namitha Rose Baby are members of the JANUS camera experiment on board the JUICE space mission to Jupiter and its moons.
The mission includes flybys of Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, as well as orbital phases around Ganymede at altitudes of 5000, 500 and 200 km. As part of the project, scientific studies of the moons Ganymede and Callisto are to be carried out to optimize the JUICE mission for observation planning. In the project, tectonically highly stressed regions on Ganymede and their kinematics will be reconstructed in order to answer questions about lunar dynamics and lunar expansion. The impact craters on Ganymede and Callisto provide information about the structure, thickness, strength and evolution of the crust of both bodies.
