FRIAS Conferences for Freiburg Early Career Researchers

You are an early career researcher at the University of Freiburg and would like to conduct a conference together with other researchers? You have innovative and original ideas for the concept and the realization of an event on an academically relevant topic? The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) is calling for conference proposals from any academic/scientific field which is of relevance to the research activities at the University of Freiburg. Up to two conferences with up to 35 participants will be funded and will take place at FRIAS between October 2025 and May 2026.

Up to two FRIAS Conferences with up to 35 participants

(taking place between October 2025 and May 2026)

The call addresses early career researchers of all disciplines at the University of Freiburg (PhD candidates, PostDocs, non-tenured researchers, junior professors) with a maximum of eight years of post-doctoral research experience.

The applicants have to be identical to the conference organizers and must include at least two early career researchers affiliated to the University of Freiburg both at the time of application and the time of the conference. National or international early career researchers from other universities are welcome to apply as co-applicants; responsibility as principal applicant lies, however, with the Freiburg researchers. Groups of two to five early career researchers can apply.

Award

  • The successful groups will be invited to hold their conference at FRIAS during the above-mentioned period.
  • FRIAS will financially support the event with up to €14,000.
  • FRIAS will assist actively in organizing the conference.

Selection Criteria 

The most innovative and convincing concepts regarding a conference submitted from any discipline represented at the university will be awarded.

For the selection of the FRIAS Conferences the following criteria apply without thematic focus:

  • Academic quality and originality of the submitted concept and academic qualification of the applicants
  • Impact of FRIAS funding on the academic development of the applicants

Application and Contact

The completed application form together with the required documents in English must be uploaded to the application webpage. After sending the application form, your team will receive the login data for completion of the application.

Log in to edit the application form and upload the required annexes as detailed below:

  1. CVs of all applicants in tabular form with list of publications (max. 1 page each).
  2. Presentation of the conference topic with a concise outline of the key questions and  goals (max. 3000 words, including bibliography/references, tables and diagrams): Emphasis must be laid on
    • the particular of the conference,
    • which further results and outputs will be generated
    • how the stated goals can be achieved through the conference
    • what contribution the funding makes to the career development of the organizers.
  3. List of Freiburg speakers. (Name, work address and position, email address.) Mention tentative acceptances if available.
  4. List of invited external speakers. (Name, work address and position, email address.) Mention tentative acceptances if available.
  5. Program structure: presentation of the workshop/conference schedule (max. 2 pages, graph presentation possible.)
  6. Calculation of costs (refer to instructions). It is highly recommended that applicants consult FRIAS – see contact below – before submitting the application regarding the budget.

The documents must be submitted in PDF format. The application language is English. The specifications for page and word limits are binding.
