The “international Genetically Engineered Machine” (iGEM) competition invites high school and university students from all over the world to form teams and work on their own research projects in the field of synthetic biology. It is the world’s largest such competition in the field of synthetic biology. In 2022, more than 350 teams took part.
The team led by Barbara Di Ventura, who has been Director of Natural Sciences at FRIAS since October 2022, wanted to use synthetic biology methods to improve the production of chemical compounds by bacteria. For their project “chAMBER”, they received a gold medal and were awarded first place in the Foundational Advance Track of the competition in the Overgraduate category.
The Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies (CIBSS) reports on the research team’s success.
