Hermann Staudinger Lecture

About the Lecture Series

The Hermann Staudinger Lectures, initiated by the School of Soft Matter Research in 2008, bring international Nobel laureates to Freiburg to share their insights. Named after Hermann Staudinger, a pioneering chemist and 1953 Nobel Prize laureate, the series honors his significant contributions to macromolecular chemistry, which laid the foundation for modern polymer chemistry.

Staudinger, who served as a professor at the University of Freiburg from 1926 to 1951, revolutionized the understanding of high-molecular-weight compounds, coining the term ‘macromolecules’. His work not only earned him the Nobel Prize but also established polymer chemistry as a distinct scientific discipline.
