Nestled in the picturesque city of Freiburg at the edge of the Black Forest, the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) offers an ideal setting for academic life. Fellows from various disciplines and countries come together in an environment in which intellectual freedom and diversity are highly valued.
As part of the University of Freiburg, one of Germany’s oldest and most prestigious institutions, FRIAS offers a space for scholars from around the world to collaborate, reflect, and engage in interdisciplinary research.
The ‘all under one roof’ concept at FRIAS ensures that everything fellows need is easily accessible. Daily interactions, shared lunches, and weekly colloquia foster a lively exchange of ideas, encouraging new perspectives in research. The institute provides all the necessary support, from modern workspaces and meeting rooms to financial and administrative assistance for organizing seminars, inviting guest scholars, and establishing academic networks.
The institute is located in the heart of Freiburg, a city known not only for its academic excellence but also for its vibrant cultural life and history. Surrounded by rolling hills and tranquil forests, Freiburg provides an inspiring environment for deep thinking and scholarly work. Research at FRIAS is conducted in various formats, including individual and group projects. Additionally, FRIAS regularly hosts events in collaboration with the University of Freiburg. At the heart of FRIAS is its vibrant community of fellows, which welcomes 20 to 40 scholars from Freiburg and across the globe each year.

Fellows enjoy great autonomy in shaping their schedules. They can choose to participate in the University of Freiburg’s courses and training programs or organize their own events with support from FRIAS. Participation in the FRIAS Colloquium, however, is mandatory.
