Freiburg Research Collaboration Programme (FRESCO)

Programme Objectives

With the Freiburg Research Collaboration (FRESCO) programme, the University of Freiburg aims to establish long-lasting, sustainable links between scholars from Freiburg and high-ranking international researchers to enhance the university’s overall research profile.

The FRESCO programme is designed to facilitate repeated short-term residencies for researchers, promoting long-term connections and the development of collaborative research networks.

Support and Benefits

Mobility
Allowance

Where applicable, fellows will be compensated for the extra costs of their stay in Freiburg, along with reimbursement for their inbound and outbound travel expenses.

Accommodation & Living

FRIAS covers up to 1,500 euros/month for accommodation and offers an additional living allowance of 1,500 euros/month to cover extra costs resulting from the fellowship stay in Freiburg.

Fellowship Rights &
Obligations

Selected applicants become FRIAS fellows, with all the associated rights and obligations, for the duration of the funding period.

Travel
Allowance

Fellows receive a travel allowance covering up to two round trips per year (inbound and outbound journeys).

Office &
Infrastructure

FRIAS provides FRESCO fellows with modern office spaces, access to university libraries, and centrally located accommodation options, including support for family-related needs.

Tailored
Support

FRIAS makes every effort to provide tailor-made solutions for accommodation, childcare, and educational facilities to meet the specific needs of fellows and their families.

Call for Applications

For FRESCO fellowships that take place between May 1, 2024, and October 31, 2026, nominations must be made by active Cluster of Excellence initiatives or their follow-up projects under the Excellence Strategy of the University of Freiburg 2026–32. Fellowships must be at least one month long, with up to three nominations allowed per initiative for the entire three-year funding period. Nominations for 2025 and 2026 must be submitted by October 31, 2024 or 2025, respectively, in consultation with FRIAS.
