FRIAS Project
The Production of Subjectivity in Psychotherapeutic Uses of Film
This research project will investigate, situate and conceptually reconfigure two interrelated developments in the history of cinema and the history of cinema studies: a) The institutional adoption of psychological and psychiatric programs which use the cinema for its supposed psychotherapeutic potential; and b) Film theory’s longstanding concern with the production of subjectivity. Putting these two historical developments into dialogue makes it possible to ask critical research questions about how mental health initiatives which use the cinema conceive of subjectivity, and in what ways orphaned perspectives from the history of film theory can alternatively model the psychological transformations which take place during the cinematic experience.
