Curriculum Vitae

I am a social and cultural anthropologist with a focus on crises and transformation processes. In my current research, I investigate the changing human-ocean-interrelations and transformation of coastal regions in climate change hotspots in Spain and Italy. Therein, I am particularly interested in threat perception and the emotions involved in transformation processes, as well as in the integration of a post-humanist (more-than-human) perspective. Methodologically, I expand the traditional ethnographic repertoire with sensory approaches, artistic methods and participatory approaches. I strive to not only publish academic papers, but also create more accessible output in the form of visuals, performances, experience pathways, soundscapes and more.

In line with this aim, I am a member of the project “¡vamos, simbiosis!“, in which scientists, artists and locals of Águilas (Spain) are jointly approaching the question of how the traditional fishing town can develop sustainable socio-economic perspectives in the face of climate and structural change. Furthermore, I am a member of the EU COST Action „Rethinking the Blue Economy: Socio-Ecological Impacts and Opportunities (RethinkBlue)“.

Earlier research foci were ethnographic research on the consequences of humanitarian interventions and processes of social re-ordering in Haiti, on conflict escalation mechanisms in Yemen and on the Zâr possession cult and its medialization in Egypt.

I am currently a Senior Researcher at the Chair of Forest and Environmental Policy at the University of Freiburg.

I studied Social and Cultural Anthropology, Modern History and Political Science at the University of Tuebingen and the American University in Cairo. In 2018, I received my doctoral degree in Political Science/Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Tuebingen.
