Two HRRC-FRIAS Fellowships 

The Connecticut/Baden-Württemberg Human Rights Research Consortium (HRRC) provides an international, interdisciplinary and inter-institutional platform to promote and support academic collaboration between researchers and research groups at universities and other research institutions in the State of Connecticut (USA) and the Land Baden-Württemberg (Germany). The Consortium is designed to serve as an incubator for diverse and interdisciplinary human rights research projects, generate critical knowledge on key human rights-related issues, and disseminate its findings. The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) at the University of Freiburg, which is an HRRC member institution, is administrating the HRRC funding in Baden-Württemberg and offers space, support and an interdisciplinary environment for HRRC researchers and projects.

Two HRRC-FRIAS Fellowships 

(3-month fellowships between 1 May 2025 and 30 September 2025) 

Application Deadline: 1 December 2024 

The fellowships are available for researchers with a completed doctoral degree who are members of the HRRC and who will be working, during the fellowship period, on a research project in the field of human rights and sustainability. 

What we offer 

The HRRC Research Fellowship enables you to complete an in-presence three-month fellowship at FRIAS in Germany. FRIAS is the international and interdisciplinary research college at the University of Freiburg, hosting every year around 50 research fellows from Freiburg, Germany and all over the world and from all disciplines. 

On 17–18 June 2025, the 4th HRRC Conference will take place in person at FRIAS. The conference is aimed at grappling with the topic “Human Rights in the Balance: Safeguarding Social and Environmental Sustainability” (for more details on the conference including the call for proposals, visit the conference website). We look forward to welcoming colleagues from both Baden-Württemberg (Germany) and Connecticut (US) at FRIAS for this event. The Fellowship period should include the time of the conference to enable the Fellows to participate and to exchange with HRRC colleagues. 

The Fellowship includes 

  • office space and up to date research support; 
  • interdisciplinary atmosphere at FRIAS including regular colloquia; 
  • travel support and, depending on the individual situation of the fellow and the applicable legal requirements, further compensation up to 3.800 € / month; 
  • support for finding accommodation (housing is not provided). 

Selection criteria 

  • Academic merit of the proposal and synergies with the conference themes

Deadline for application is 1 December 2024. 

Applications should be submitted to hrrc2025@frias.uni-freiburg.de. Materials are to be submitted by email as a single combined PDF document that should include the name of the applicant and the affiliation. Applications should be sent from the applicant’s university address. The subject line of the email should include “HRRC Fellowship 2025”. 

All candidates will receive notification of the outcome via email by 1 February 2025.
