Difference and Identity. The Dialogue between Schelling and Hegel
The project focuses on the dialogue between the German Idealist philosophers Schelling and Hegel. Although this dispute is doubtlessly one of the great and influential debates in the history of Western philosophy, there is remarkably little literature on the topic. The project will, in historical terms, for the first time in detail reconstruct the main steps of this dialogue (collaboration, alienation, and mutual critique), thereby focussing on its decisive and rarely examined early period (1801–1811). In systematic terms, the project seeks to show that this dialogue is fundamentally to be understood as a dispute concerning the concept of difference. Both thinkers start out with the shared idea that the desired ‘system of philosophy’ may only be achieved if grounded by what they call the ‘principle of absolute identity’. Yet Schelling and Hegel disagree on how precisely to relate absolute identity to the concept of difference. The project shows that this disagreement is present quite from the start, but only becomes evident to both thinkers over the course of the following years, and, later on, leads to their breaking-off. In working through this debate, the project intends to single out and systematically discuss several concepts of difference as emerging from this dispute, such as quantitative difference as subordinate to identity, negativity as relational difference immanent to identity, or difference as alterity or exteriority. Finally, the project wishes to show that this reconstruction, precisely by focusing on the question of difference, sheds some new light on the, allegedly, ‘post-idealist’ traditions of 19th and 20th century thought.
