FRIAS Project
The role of unresolved attachment trauma in the transgenerational context of mother-infant interaction and its clinical relevance for psychotherapy.
In the research project two facets of the role of unresolved attachment trauma will be investigated in developmental and clinical domains. Child maltreatment (CM) is a risk factor for several disorders in adulthood. Maternal attachment representation is suggested as one moderating candidate for explaining the link between the history of CM and impaired caregiving. About 250 mother-infant-dyads were recruited at the Ulm University Hospital in the context of a large research consortium (TRANS-GEN). The planned project aims a detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis of the maternal narratives assessed with the
Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP) focusing on unresolved trauma to be associated with maternal behavior towards the child. The AAP measure includes scales (e.g. Agency, Synchrony) and Defensive Processes, especially traumatic markers. A major goal is to develop a concept for risk and resilience factors. Unresolved trauma has predominantly been found in psychological disorders. Previous own studies have shown several neural and clinical correlates of unresolved attachment, suggesting that this subgroup of patients is mostly impaired.
