SpectraMax iD5 (Molecular Devices)
The SpectraMax iD5 Multi-Mode Microplate Reader comes with built-in absorbance, fluorescence, luminescence, time-resolved fluorescence (TRF), and tunable fluorescence polarization.

BioTek EL406 Washer Dispenser
The combination of the BioTek EL406 Washer Dispenser, Thermo Scientific RapidSTAK plate stacker, and BioTek Synergy H4 microplate reader creates a powerful automated system for a wide range of liquid handling and analysis applications. This setup enables efficient, high-throughput processing from sample preparation to data acquisition.
- Combination of 4 washing buffers and 3 dispenser reagents
- Compatible with 96-, 384- and 1536-well plate
- Automated for washing, dispensing and transport to plate reader
- Plate stacker up to 30 microplates

Octet RED96 System (FortéBio)
The Octet RED96 is a label-free, real-time analysis instrument designed for characterization of protein-protein and protein-small molecule binding kinetics and for determining protein concentrations and titers.
- Dip and Read™ label-free assay format
- Uses disposable biosensors in an 8×12 array for simple, efficient assays
- Measures the titer of 96 samples in just 30 minutes.
- Kinetics: Association rate (ka), Dissociation rate (kd), Equilibrium constant (KD)

Zetasizer Nano S90 (Malvern)
The Zetasizer Nano S90 is a specialized instrument dedicated to the measurement of particle size and molecular weight. It utilizes Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) technology with a fixed 90° detection angle.
- Characterization of colloids and nanoparticles
- Measures particles from 0.3 nm to 5 µm in diameter
- Minimum Sample Volume: Requires only 20 μL of sample for measurements

Seahorse XFe96 Analyzer (Agilent)
The Seahorse XFe96 Analyzer is a powerful instrument for real-time metabolic analysis of live cells. It offers high-throughput capabilities and versatile applications in cellular metabolism research.
- Measures both oxygen consumption rate (OCR) and extracellular acidification rate (ECAR) in real-time.
- Uses a 96-well plate format for efficient analysis of multiple samples.
- Performs analysis without the need for fluorescent or radioactive labels.

Chromatography Systems
ÄKTA systems (GE Healthcare Life Sciences)
A number of ÄKTA chromatography systems are available for separation and purification of biomolecules at scale ranging from micrograms to grams. The following instruments are located in the Signalhaus:

Our ÄKTA systems are equipped with a broad range of chromatographic columns and media, which cover all main types of chromatographic techniques: size exclusion, cation and anion exchange, affinity, hydrophobic interaction and immobilized-metal affinity (IMAC) chromatography.

FLEXAR™ LC Systems (Perkin Elmar)
This ultra HPLC machine is a reliable system designed to provide fast analytical separations with highest sensitivity and highest resolution.
The modules available in our laboratory include:

Flow Cytometry
Attune™ NxT Cytometer (Invitrogen)
The Attune NxT Flow Cytometer is an advanced, high throughput, benchtop cytometer that uses acoustic pressure to confine the injected particles to a tight central line as the sample passes through the optical cell for interrogation.
- 4 lasers (488nm blue, 638nm red, 561nm yellow, 405 violet),
- 16 detection channels
- Flexible Sample Handling (standard FACS tubes, micro centrifuge tubes and 1.5 ml tubes)
- Attune NxT Autosampler compatible with 96-, 384-, and deep-well plates

CyAn™ ADP (Beckman Coulter)
The CyAn ADP High-Performance Flow Cytometer is a research tool engineered for precision analysis of cells, bacteria, and other similarly sized particles.
- 3 excitation lines with independent, alignment-free focusing optics
- Simultaneous 9 color and 2 scatter parameters
- Analysis rates of 50,000 events per second
- Full 9 × 9 interlaser compensation matrix, and high sensitivity.

S3e Cell Sorter (BioRad)
The S3 Cell Sorter is an automated benchtop cell sorter that provides exceptional sort purity, recovery, and yield without compromising performance and sensitivity.
- Equipped with two lasers (488 nm, 561 nm) and four fluorescent detectors, plus forward and side scatters
- Complete internalized fluidics and temperature control system
- Two-way sorting (single, purity, enrich) with collection of up to 5 x 5 ml or 1.5 ml sample tube each direction

CyFlow Cube Cell Sorter (Sysmex)
The CyFlow® Cube is a compact flow cytometer for analysis of single cells and microscopic particles.
- Closed piezo-driven sorter system allows non-destructive cell sorting with high purity
- Sorting channels: GFP, PE, APC.

Westerblot Detection
Fusion Fx Imaging System (Vilber Lourmat)
Optimized luminescence and fluorescence imaging system for quantitative image acquisition.
- Cooled CCD camera with 16-bit grayscale depth
- Luminescence measurements with very low background (<1%) in 20 min
- Max. Recording area 23×23 cm
- Lighting elements: UV table, UV incident light source, epi-LED incident light source in the visible range (blue, green, red)
- 580nm and 680 nm spectral filters for fluorescence measurements

Odyssey CLx Imaging System (Li-COR Biosciences)
Laser-based imager for excitation of near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence dyes.
- 700 nm and 800 nm fluorescence channels
- Multiplex fluorescence to detect two protein targets in each sample lane with great sensitivity
- Scan up to 9 mini-blots, 6 microplates, or 30 slides at the same time

Bioreactors and Fermentors
CelliGen 310 (New Brunswick Scientific)
- Our facility has two autoclavable benchtop cell culture bioreactors for culturing mammalian and insect cell lines.
- The CelliGen 310 (2.5 L and 14 L) can be operated in batch, fed-batch and perfusion mode independently of each other or connected in series.

BioFlo 415 (New Brunswick Scientific)
- The 14 L serializable-in-place BioFlo 415 Fermentor is a robust production scale system, designed to meet any research and production needs.
- Up to 32 parameters can be controlled by the BioCommand software, which allows very high cell density growth.

Electroporator Systems
Amaxa Nucleofector (Lonza)
Nucleofector® II device is a tool for highly efficient non-viral transfection of primary cells and difficult-to-transfect cell lines

Gene Pulser MXcell Electroporation System (BioRad)
Gene Pulser MXcell systems can be used to electroporate as few as 105 cells by using a 96-well plate or as many as 106 to 107 cells in a 12-well plate or in a cuvette.

Multiporator Electroporation System (Eppendorf)
The Multiporator can be used for electroporation of animal and human cells, primary cells, plant cells and embryonic stem cells. The system provides multiple pulsing from 1 to 99 pulses with a one-minute interval.

MicroPulser Electroporator (BioRad)
For transformation of bacteria, yeast, and other microorganism. Manual programming allows voltage to be selected in a 200–3,000 V range with 10 V precision and allows pulse width to be selected in a 1.0–4.0 ms range with 0.1 ms precision

qPCR-Thermocycler
CFX384 Touch Real-Time PCR Detection System (BioRad)
- High-performance real-time PCR instrument high-throughput sample processing in a 384-well format
- Sensitive 4-Color detection optics allows for multiplex reactions with up to 4 targets

qTOWER 2.2 (Analytik Jena)
- High-performance instrument designed for quantitative real-time PCR in 96-well format
- Ideal for expression analyses, genotyping, and pathogen detection
- Special microtiter plate design and the fast fluorescence detector
- Delivers data in approximately 30 minutes

Sample Preparation
Freeze Dryer Alpha 1-4 LSC plus (CHRIST)
- The freeze dryer ALPHA 1-4 LSC is a high performance universal laboratory unit for freeze drying of solid or liquid products in ampoules, vials, glass, flasks, plasma bottles or dishes.
- The LSCplus controller supports manual and automatic process control for reproducible results.

High-Pressure Cell Disruption (I&L Biosystems)
- The TS 1.1 KW homogenizer is a bench-top model that processed all kind of cell suspensions.
- Efficiently disrupts: bacteria, yeast, algae, mammalian and insect cells, fungus etc.

Ultrasonic Homogenizers (Bandelin)
- SONOPULS ultrasonic homogenizers generate high-performance ultrasound with high intensities and ultrasonic amplitudes
- For disruption of cell, bacteria or tissue, production of emulsions or homogenization of substances
- HD2070 located at room temperature
- HD3100 is permanently located in the 4°C cold room, ideal for sensitive sample preparation
- Volumes between 1 ml and 500 ml

Vacuum Concentrator – SpeedVac (Thermo Scientific)
- The SpeedVac concentrator is for basic molecular biology such as drying down of DNA preparations in water.
- The system uses state-of-the-art centrifugation, vacuum, and heat technologies to remove solvents and concentrated samples.

Low-pressure plasma Laboratory Unit (Diener electronic GmbH)
- The Zepto plasma system can be used for process development, cleaning, activation and etching in small batches of different materials, such as glass, metal, plastics, ceramic.

High Throughput Screening (HTS)
Tecan Freedom Evo 200 Liquid Handling System with disposable tips
Robotic setup:
- 8-channel disposable tips, pipetting: 1-1000 µl
- Heated incubator up to 37°C without CO2
- Carriers can be adjusted for individual temperature (FL601 Recirculating Cooler: -20°C to +40°C)
- Carousel with stacking system for 110 plates, 21 racks of 10-200 µl and 12 racks of 1000 µl disposable tips
- BioTek 405TM TSUVS plate washer for 96- and 384-well microplates

BioTek Multiflo Microplate Dispenser:

- 10 optical channels (FSC, SSC and eight fluorescence channels) for multi-parameter flow cytometry

- Integrated auto-labelling and MACSQuant column for magnetic rare cell pre-enrichment

Our robotics facility offers an automation for High Throughput Screening (HTS) protocols as well as iterative process for applied research.
An HTS work involved a step by step development from an early design of experiment, optimization to the transfer for automation.
