Doctoral studies
Students who have a master’s degree in Chinese Studies can pursue a doctorate in Freiburg. The exact requirements for admission to a doctoral program can be found here (please note that only the conditions set out in the doctoral regulations dated March 31, 2016 apply).

JunProf. Dr. Jessica Imbach supervises master’s and doctoral theses on Chinese culture in the 20th and 21st centuries with the following areas of focus:
- modern and contemporary literature
- film and new media
- cultural and media discourses
- popular culture
Prof. Dr. Daniel Leese supervises master’s and doctoral theses on Chinese history and politics with the following areas of focus:
- recent Chinese history
- current politics of the Chinese Communist Party
- Maoism as ideology and social practice
- intellectual history and debates in China
Prof. Dr. Nicola Spakowski supervises master’s and doctoral theses on the history of China in the 20th and 21st centuries, focusing on the following areas:
- gender and women’s studies
- social developments
- historiography
- popular and public history
- ideology
- scientific and political discourse
