Research

Information about our research
Here you will find all the essential information about our research focuses, ongoing projects, publications and doctoral research.
Our research is diverse, interdisciplinary and internationally networked, with a clear focus on socially relevant questions and ethnographic approaches to global challenges.

Focus Areas

Our research focuses on social change, environmental relationships, mobility, material culture, and political negotiation. Our regional expertise is primarily focused on Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America. We combine ethnographic depth with socially relevant, locally grounded and globally connected questions.

Research Projects

Our ongoing and completed projects showcase the thematic and methodological diversity of the institute. These projects often arise from close collaboration with international partners and societal stakeholders, ranging from local fieldwork to transregional comparative studies.

Publications

The publications of our staff, students and doctoral candidates reflect the breadth and depth of research conducted at our institute. In addition to these individual publications, the Freiburg Ethnological Working Papers series is published regularly to make current research findings publicly accessible.

Doctoral Projects

Our doctoral projects cover a wide range of topics, from empirical studies on migration, the environment and religion, to theoretical work on social order, identity and power. Doctoral candidates receive personalised supervision and play an active role in the institute’s research activities.
