Profil
Peter Petré is professor of English linguistics at the University of Freiburg. He holds a PhD (2010) from KU Leuven, and previously held positions as associate professor at the Université de Lille (2014-2015), and assistant (2015-2020), then associate (2020-2024) and full (2024 -2026) professor at the University of Antwerp. Combining linguistics, history, and cognitive science with data-oriented methodologies, his research focuses on the grammar-pragmatics interface, on how grammar evolves within individual cognition and how the community grammar emerges out of individual interactions. Between 2015-2021 he led the ERC project Mind-Bending Grammars, which investigated syntactic behaviour and change across the lifespan, and co-developed the large-scale corpus Early Modern Multiloquent Authors (EMMA). Next to numerous journal publications he authored Constructions and Environments: Copular, Passive, and Related Constructions in Old and Middle English (2014, Oxford UP), and has co-edited various volumes, including Context, Intent and Variation in Grammaticalization (2023, De Gruyter, with Hendrik De Smet and Benedikt Szmrecsanyi).
