Quality management

Quality objectives in studies and teaching

Excellent teaching is the declared goal of the Faculty of Biology. For this reason, the Faculty Council set and approved quality objectives for studies and teaching at its meeting on 19 April 2018. Goals were developed in the four target areas LEARN, TEACH, FRAMEWORK and VALUES.

What happens with the evaluation results?

At its meeting on December 4, 2014, the Academic Committee decided on how to proceed with the evaluation results. The concept for improving teaching quality developed during this process is based on the principle of subsidiarity. Consequently, the development of measures to improve teaching will initially remain in the hands of the module coordinators and the participating instructors and will not be directly dictated or controlled by the Academic Committee.

The comprehensive reports from all evaluated modules are made available to the Academic Committee and distributed to pairs of evaluators (each consisting of a student and a faculty member of the Academic Committee). These evaluation teams analyze the reports, conduct a strengths-and-weaknesses analysis, and provide feedback on areas for improvement to the individual modules. These analyses are shared with the module coordinators and support the development of measures within the modules. In cases where the Academic Committee identifies significant pedagogical shortcomings on the part of individual instructors or serious problems in the organization and implementation of the module, the Dean of Studies seeks a discussion with the relevant individuals, emphasizes the availability of continuing education programs in higher education pedagogy, and advises the module coordinators on restructuring. If necessary, proposals for amending the examination regulations are also derived from this.

Each semester, the results of the central evaluations are summarised in a brochure and published here.
