„Stay Silent, Shout, Fail? On the Difficulty of Talking about the Israel-Palestine Conflict in Germany“

Following the attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 and the ensuing war in Gaza, universities in Germany and around the world became places of political protest and tense debate. These disputes are often highly polarized and emotional – and they demonstrate how difficult and complex it is to talk about the Israel-Palestine conflict in Germany.

With the series of events ‘Stay Silent, Shout, Fail? On the Difficulty of Talking about the Israel–Palestine Conflict in Germany’ in the Colloquium politicum programme, the University of Freiburg intends to open up spaces for reflection. The main focus of the series is the question of what issues are negotiated when we discuss Israel and Palestine and what aspects of them make communication so challenging: What controversies about German history, memory, and responsibility are being resolved here? What role do ideas of belonging and identity as well as experiences of anti-Semitism and racism in Germany play in them? What would the preconditions for listening and speaking to each other be? What can and should universities do in this connection, and what challenges does this pose for them?

With talks, discussions, and workshops that take up issues and questions from a practical angle, the University of Freiburg invites the interested public to reflect together and to attempt a change in perspective.
