- Application deadline: 31. August 2026
- Publication date: 8. July 2026
- Start-date: At the earliest possible date.
- Scope of work: Full-time position

Description
The holder of the professorship represents the entire spectrum of Canon Law in research and teaching. Interdisciplinary openness and specialized research expertise within Canon Law are required. With regard to the professorship’s responsibility for teaching in theological degree programs, the candidate must possess a strong research profile in both canon law and theology. The appointee will have to contribute actively to all degree programs and interdisciplinary courses offered by the Faculty of Theology. In addition, the successful candidate should engage in existing collaborations and projects within the faculty and shape its research profile through new initiatives and partnerships, not least with the philological, philosophical, and law faculties and with ecclesiastical institutions. A historical dimension to canon law and openness to methods from the digital humanities would be desirable.
The University of Freiburg seeks an outstanding scholar who has completed a university degree in Catholic Theology and demonstrated excellent qualifications in Canon Law, ideally including a Licentiate in Canon Law. Practical experience in a canon law-related field (e.g., diocesan tribunals, diocesan administration, or ecclesiastical advisory bodies) is an advantage.
In all other respects, the conditions for appointment according to § 47 Landeshochschulgesetz apply.
We especially welcome female applicants for this advertised position.
We request for the following application materials:
