The University of Freiburg is ranked second nationally in the subjects of anatomy and physiology (internationally ranked 51-100) and dentistry (internationally ranked 51-120). In geography, it is ranked third in Germany and 101-150 internationally. It is ranked fifth in Germany in agriculture and forestry (internationally ranked 96) and English language and literature (internationally ranked 101-150).

QS publishes rankings in the five subject areas of Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences & Management, as well as in the 55 subjects below these levels. The University of Freiburg is listed in 34 subject rankings.

The rankings are based on the five indicators ‘Academic Reputation’, ‘Employer Reputation’, ‘Citations per Paper’, H-Index (a measure of the productivity and impact of published work) and ‘International Research Network’.

The indicators are weighted differently in the individual departments and their subjects. Not all indicators are considered in all subject rankings; some subject rankings are based on fewer than the five indicators listed above.
