Kunstgeschichte (Art History)

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) – 2 field degree program - Minor Field

Located at the intersection of Germany, France, and Switzerland, Freiburg offers access to museums and monuments for in-depth study of art from all periods. The BA in Art History provides close engagement with original artworks, professional insights, and innovative teaching, covering European and global contemporary art. In addition to architecture, sculpture, and painting, the programme covers printmaking, photography, new media, and ephemeral art forms such as performance. The curriculum allows students to develop their own areas of focus, and, thanks to numerous international partnerships, parts of the coursework can be completed abroad. After completing the programme, students gain foundational knowledge of key artworks and their creators. They develop the ability to analyse visual artistic phenomena in a nuanced way and engage critically with digital and AI-generated imagery. Those interested in teaching, research, heritage conservation, or museum work are encouraged to pursue a Master’s in Art History.
