USA makes entry more difficult for non-binary and trans* people

Freiburg, 06/03/2025

University members should be aware of the revised rules for entry permits when planning trips to the USA. Non-binary and transgender people will be discriminated against in future.

The German Federal Foreign Office has updated its travel and security guidelines for the USA. University members are asked to take note of these before planning business trips. In particular, entry to the USA has now been made more difficult for non-binary and transgender people. In an update to the travel and security guidelines, the German Federal Foreign Office writes:

„Due to an executive order from 20 January 2025, in the future, persons entering the United States must indicate either the gender ‘male’ or ‘female’ when applying for an ESTA or visa; the gender entry of the applicant at the time of birth is relevant here. Travellers who have the gender entry ‘X’ or whose current gender entry differs from their gender entry at birth should contact the responsible U.S. mission in Germany before entry to find out the applicable entry requirements.”

University members should inform themselves in good time and, if necessary, seek exchange with participating funding or partner organisations.
