Studying forest growth and development under climate change as a means of advancing our understanding of these processes, informing policy and raising societal awareness, I am engaged with the classical natural sciences. However, when it comes to the edges of our understanding of current crises, I am also interested in the limitations of classical scientific approaches and their ideal of understanding reality from a mere observer position. I believe that in order to mitigate the global socio-environmental crises, we also need a deeper understanding of the human beings behind these unsustainable developments. A deeper understanding of ourselves and our psyche – crucially enriched by first-person experiences and intercultural perspectives that help expose unsustainable paradigms. Therefore, in my work I try to combine forest and environmental sciences with psychology, philosophy and especially contemplative approaches in research, practice and teaching contexts.
