What is the role of materials research in industry? This is the guiding question behind our new lecture format at the FMF. All interested parties are cordially invited to listen to speakers from industry, ask questions and engage in discussion.

Open doors with the mouse!
Every year on 3 October, many companies and institutions across Germany open their doors to the public. The FMF participates in this event in cooperation with the WDR every two years, inviting curious children between the ages of 8 and 12 to embark on an exciting journey of discovery into the world of materials.

Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees oversees the scientific activities of the FMF, advises the Executive Board on important issues and promotes contact with groups interested in the FMF’s research. The board meets once a year.
Science Days
Every October, Germany’s largest science and MINT festival, organised by the Association for the Promotion of Science & Technology, takes place at Europapark. We at the FMF are also represented there with a young team and an exciting hands-on activity.
Husemann Cup
Elfriede Husemann is not only one of the most important pioneers in polymer chemistry, she is also the founder, long-time sponsor and namesake of the football tournament organised by the working groups and departments of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Freiburg.
Internal FMF- und FIT-Kolloquium
The joint event with our partner centre for interactive materials (FIT) provides a platform for young scientists, project managers and industry partners to give presentations and offers opportunities for exchange and inspiration.
Freshers’ day
At the official welcome ceremony at the University of Freiburg in the Europa Park Stadium, the FMF is required to have an information stand. We take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to talk to new students and advise them on the opportunities available in the field of materials research at the FMF.
School cooperation
Teaching children to enjoy science – that is the goal of our educational programme in the area of lifelong learning. What began in the 2023/24 school year with pilot projects at a primary school in Freiburg entered its next phase in 2025: under the expert guidance of Prof. Hartmann’s working group at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, primary school pupils were given the opportunity to spend a whole morning getting a taste of university life in the ‘Uni-Luft’ student laboratory.
Company outing
One team, one path, one goal: the team event brings together employees from a wide variety of FMF departments. It creates a unique opportunity for exchange on a beautiful hiking route in and around Freiburg, ending with a culinary finale.
Christmas party
On the day of the celebration, the FMF premises are transformed into festive Christmas rooms with a delicious buffet. Traditionally, the challenge cups for the best abstract and the best presentation at the annual colloquium are also presented to their winners.
New Year’s café
At the beginning of a new year, the administration invites colleagues from the central university administration and participating institutes to a New Year’s café for a personal exchange.
