Materials and Minds for our Future

For over 30 years, the FMF has been developing innovative concepts and creating pioneering materials and technologies. This makes the FMF a resource centre and pool of ideas for materials research in a unique, interdisciplinary alliance consisting of six natural science and technical faculties, other German and European universities, the Fraunhofer Institutes in Freiburg and partners from industry.

As winter begins, we are pleased to present this year’s beautiful frosty winning photo from the ‘Science is an Art’ photo competition. The contest was part of the programme for the internal FMF and FIT Kolloquium 2025, which was attended by over 100 participants from science and industry.

Best Student Paper Award RTSD

Sebastian Useche (left), doctoral student at FMF, is researching how innovative machine learning methods can advance material-resolved detection with modern photon-counting detectors. His paper was awarded the Best Student Paper Award at the international IEEE NSS-MIC RTSD conference.
