Research

Key research areas

Excellent in networking

Within the framework of our research program, the key focus areas pursue practice-oriented, interdisciplinary basic research in the fields of new materials and new technologies. Research in the project groups at the FMF brings together Freiburg’s core competencies in physics, chemistry, biology, polymer sciences, medicine, regenerative energy technology, and microsystems engineering. Currently, the FMF research network is organized into eight project groups.

Junior research groups

Research into the future

The FMF intends to establish junior research groups that have not been initiated by its current members. This program aims to increase the number of independent junior research groups at the FMF and to establish the FMF as a workplace for young early-career researchers. A basic prerequisite for being accepted as a junior research group leader and FMF member is the successful acquisition of an independent junior research group whose organizational home will be at the FMF.

Spin-offs

From research to practice

The Freiburg Materials Research Center (FMF) serves as a central hub connecting the university’s institutes, the Fraunhofer Society, the region, and industry. It is an ideal starting point for transitioning academic science into industrial applications and for knowledge-based startup formation. FMF strengthens the potential that drives our vision of Materials and Minds for our Future.
