FRIAS Collaborations & Partners

Networking is one of FRIAS’s central strategic goals. The institute works closely with many renowned national and international partners and is also open to collaborating with foundations and the private sector. University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS)

UBIAS is a worldwide network of about 50 University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study. UBIAS institutes are associated with or embedded in universities, actively contributing to the international academic culture and major scientific achievements of their home institutions. UBIAS seeks to enable structured forms of exchange in this growing segment, including biennial conferences and joint programmes between partner institutes. The network was initiated in 2010 at a conference hosted by FRIAS.

Network of European Institutes for Advanced Study (NetIAS)

NetIAS brings together 26 Institutes for Advanced Study across Europe. It was created in 2004 to foster dialogue on IAS practices and to explore possible forms of cooperation. FRIAS has been a member of NetIAS since 2018. NetIAS members share the objective of creating international and multidisciplinary learning communities. One of the recent joint projects, which FRIAS is also involved in, is the Constructive Advanced Thinking (CAT) initiative, which aims to build networks of outstanding early-career researchers.

Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa

The Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) is an international research institute at the University of Ghana in Legon, Accra. Established in 2018 with significant involvement from the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), MIASA promotes collaboration among Ghanaian scholars and their international colleagues across disciplinary and national boundaries.

Nagoya University

The University of Freiburg maintains a close partnership with Nagoya University, with which FRIAS has long been linked through joint research activities. Currently, this collaboration involves the promotion of postdoctoral research through mutual associated memberships in the universities’ respective programmes, such as the Young Academy for Sustainability Research (YAS) at Freiburg University and the Young Leaders Cultivation Programme (YLC) at Nagoya University.
