Research Partnerships and Structures

We support the university’s central research infrastructures and facilities in all phases of their development (e.g. implementation, organisational changes) and contribute to the conceptual development of the framework conditions. 

We support the university-wide commission work in the area of research.

We coordinate the realisation of new research projects with non-university research institutions and foundations.

Our department covers the following areas of central research management:

Service for Scientific Research

We provide support with applications for externally funded research infrastructure projects, including:

  • DFG applications according to Art. 91b GG
  • Applications to the MWK for the funding of research infrastructure; in particular as part of the Structural and Innovation Fund for Research (SI-BW)

We provide advice regarding the implementation of organisational structures for large-scale research equipment, including:

  • Integration into existing facilities and networks
  • Setting up a core/shared facility
  • Utilisation regulations
  • Requirements for non-profit status

We provide support in all matters relating to the establishment and organisational development of research centres.  

We coordinate the organisational and legal framework conditions for individual research funding projects with non-university research institutions and foundations.

(Re)investment programme for research infrastructures

In the (Re)investment programme for research infrastructures, the University of Freiburg makes it possible to acquire high-quality infrastructures but also to apply for repairs, maintenance, and replacement purchases. Eligible applicants are faculties (except the Faculty of Medicine), research centres (except for current Clusters of Excellence with DFG funding), and shared facilities located at a faculty. Please submit applications to the dean’s office of the respective faculty or the leadership of the research institute. Individual applications by researchers to the RIB are not permitted.

The current round of applications is closed. The next round is planned for 2026.
