Prospective Students
The University of Freiburg offers the opportunity to start your studies in mathematics through a Bachelor’s or a teacher education program, and we also provide a wide range of options at the Master’s and PhD levels. Our Online Study Choice Assistant (OSA) is designed to help you decide if a degree in mathematics is right for you. Study programmes
Bachelor
This represents the traditional start to a degree in mathematics following secondary education. Beginning with core courses in Analysis and Linear Algebra, the curriculum allows for further specialisation and the selection of an applied subject in the later stages of study.
Bachelor of Science Mathematics and Polyvalent dual major bachelor’s degree programme.
Master
The Master of Science programmes in Mathematics and Mathematics in Data and Technology complement our Bachelor’s offerings. The MSc Mathematics is designed to lead students to the cutting edge of contemporary research. The English-language MSc Mathematics in Data and Technology focuses on applying mathematical fundamentals to the field of Artificial Intelligence..
Teacher Education
The study programme for secondary school teaching begins with a ‘Polyvalent dual major bachelor’s degree programme‘ with a teaching option. In addition to mathematics and a second subject, this program already incorporates educational science and subject didactics. These skills are further deepened and applied during the subsequent ‘Master of Education’ program, specifically during the practical internship semester. For those wishing to study mathematics as a third subject, we offer an Extension Master’s degree.
Doctorate
If you wish to continue your research in mathematics after completing a Master’s degree, you can pursue a PhD. The first step is to find a supervisor for your doctoral thesis.
Courses for School Students
The Freiburg Seminar supports exceptionally talented and motivated secondary school students within the Freiburg district. Under certain conditions, students may even be able to attend university lectures while still in school.

Registered guest auditors are more than welcome to attend our lectures. To determine which courses are best suited to your prior knowledge, please feel free to consult with the Mathematical Institute’s academic advisory service in advance.

Girls Day on 23 April 2026
Our Girls’ Day programme for students in grades 7 to 11 focuses on surprising card tricks and methods for transmitting encrypted messages. It explores the questions: Why does this work? What is the logic behind the seemingly impossible?
Science Days im Europa-Park Rust
We’ve got the power! Under this motto, the Science Days take place every October at Europa-Park Rust, introducing students to STEM subject.
Freiburg Seminar
The Freiburg Seminar supports exceptionally talented and motivated secondary school students within the Freiburg district. Under certain conditions, students may even be able to attend university lectures while still in school.
Mathematics Day
Once a year, usually in September or October, we host the Freiburg Mathematics Day for students in grades 10 to 13 who enjoy puzzling and solving challenging problems.
Guest Students
Are you looking to attend individual lectures without pursuing a formal degree? Our guest auditing program is open to people of all ages. If you are interested, please feel free to contact the general academic advisory service.
Open House Event
Every November, our Open House event provides an overview of our degree programs, featuring guest lectures, the chance to get a first taste of a first-year lecture, and the opportunity to chat with current students.
Alumni Day and Summer Festival
We are celebrating our graduates in early July with a special keynote lecture. Come along to the following summer festival, where plenty of food and drinks will be provided!
Professional Development
Information on continuing education programmes that do not require enrollment at the University of Freiburg can be found here. These offerings include the Mathematical Colloquium and lectures provided by the Department of Mathematics Education. These programs are open to participants of all ages.
