Die Professur ist am Physikalischen Institut der Universität Freiburg angesiedelt und stärkt Forschung und Lehre an der Schnittstelle von Physik, Lebenswissenschaften und Datenwissenschaften. Sie ist in ein interdisziplinäres Umfeld mit engen Bezügen zu weicher kondensierter Materie, bio-inspirierter Materialforschung und biologischen Systemen eingebunden und adressiert aktuelle Forschungsthemen, unter anderem mit möglicher Anbindung an den bestehenden Exzellenzcluster CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies. Mögliche Forschungsfelder umfassen beispielsweise die Struktur und Dynamik von Signalkomplexen, (sub)zelluläre Dynamik, Selbstorganisation, Energietransduktion, Biomechanik und Informationsverarbeitung in lebender Materie. Typische methodische Zugänge in diesem Feld können Konzepte der statistischen Physik, der Nichtgleichgewichtsphysik, der Theorie stochastischer Prozesse und nichtlinearer Dynamik sowie daten- und KI-gestützte Modellierung umfassen.

Vorausgesetzt werden eine hervorragende Promotion in Physik oder einem eng verwandten Fachgebiet, international sichtbare wissenschaftliche Leistungen in der theoretischen Modellierung komplexer oder biologischer Systeme sowie eine exzellente Publikationstätigkeit im relevanten Forschungsfeld an der Schnittstelle zu den quantitativen Lebenswissenschaften. Erforderlich sind zudem Lehrerfahrung und didaktische Eignung, die Fähigkeit zur Einwerbung kompetitiver Drittmittel sowie zum Aufbau und zur Leitung einer eigenständigen Forschungsgruppe. Die Professur beteiligt sich an der Lehre in den B.Sc.-Studiengängen (in deutscher Sprache; die Bereitschaft zum Erwerb der erforderlichen Sprachkenntnisse wird vorausgesetzt) und M.Sc.-Studiengängen der Physik. Eine aktive Mitwirkung in kooperativen Forschungs- und Verbundvorhaben gehört zum Aufgabenbereich der Professur.

This professorship is also particularly suitable for outstandingly qualified early-career researchers.

The professorship is based at the Institute of Physics of the University of Freiburg and strengthens research and teaching at the interface between physics, the life sciences, and data science. It is embedded in an interdisciplinary environment with close links to soft condensed matter, bio-inspired materials research, and biological systems, and addresses current research topics, including possible links with the Cluster of Excellence CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies. Possible research areas include, for example, the structure and dynamics of signalling complexes, (sub)cellular dynamics, self-organization, energy transduction, biomechanics, and information processing in living matter. Typical methodological approaches in this field may comprise concepts from statistical physics, non-equilibrium physics, the theory of stochastic processes and nonlinear dynamics, as well as data- and AI-based modelling.

Applicants must hold an outstanding PhD in physics or a closely related field, demonstrate internationally visible scientific achievements in the theoretical modeling of complex or biological systems, and have an excellent publication record in the relevant research area at the interface to the quantitative life sciences. Further required qualifications include teaching experience and didactic aptitude, the ability to acquire competitive third-party funding, and the ability to establish and lead an independent research group. The professorship contributes to teaching in the B.Sc. programmes (taught in German; willingness to acquire sufficient German language skills is expected.) and M.Sc. programmes in Physics. Active participation in collaborative research and joint research initiatives forms part of the duties of the position.

Die Professur ist als strategische Schlüsselberufung im Zuge eines Generationenwechsels am Mathematischen Institut konzipiert. Sie vertritt die Analysis nichtlinearer partieller Differentialgleichungen in herausragender Weise und entwickelt sie weiter. Sie beteiligt sich angemessen an allen Lehraufgaben des Instituts sowie an der akademischen Selbstverwaltung.

Vorausgesetzt wird:

The professorship is conceived as a strategic key appointment in the upcoming generational transition at the Mathematical Institute. It represents and advances the field of analysis of non-linear partial differential equations on an outstanding level. It contributes in an adequate way to all of the institute’s teaching responsibilities and participates actively in academic governance.

We require:

• an international leader in the area of Analysis whose scientific achievements are demonstrated by excellent publications and who has contributed to shaping the field;
  
• the qualification and willingness to decisively influence the scholarly, structural and strategic orientation of the Mathematical Institute and to assume a leadership role within the Institute;
