Welcome to the Institut for Anatomy und Cell Biology of the University of Freiburg.
Anatomy (from the ancient Greek ἀνατέμνειν anatémnein – “to cut open”, “to dissect”) is the science of the structure of the living human body. Through the systematic, scientific dissection of complex biological systems, anatomy investigates how structure and function are related at a macroscopic, cellular and molecular level.
As a preclinical institute of the Medical Faculty of the University of Freiburg, we teach macroscopic and microscopic anatomy, neuroanatomy and embryology in the degree programs of human medicine, dentistry, molecular medicine and pharmacy.
Our research addresses the structural, functional and molecular organization of the nervous system, processes of development, differentiation, synaptic plasticity and neurodegeneration. State-of-the-art methods are used – from the analysis of human tissue to studies with hiPSCs and organoids. A particular focus is on the transfer of anatomical findings into medical research and practice.
