Practical Year

Transferring to the University of Freiburg for the Practical Year is only possible for Students who are already enrolled at a University in Germany. Please check the German Website for more information.

The Faculties of Medicine in Baden-Württemberg have agreed that splitting tertials within the framework of national mobility is not allowed.

The tertial periods also apply to external applicants. An earlier start of the individual tertials is not possible. If you wish to start or end your tertial later, please discuss this in advance with the teaching hospital.

The application is made exclusively through the PJ Portal at www.pj-portal.de. Direct applications to the clinics and departments are not possible.

Students from the Faculty of Medicine Mannheim can also complete parts of their Practical Year at our Academic Teaching Hospitals. However, it is advisable that the quarterly periods align as closely as possible with our tertial periods. Please contact us beforehand to arrange coordination.

After booking a tertial via the PJ-Portal at the Medical Center Freiburg – University of Freiburg or the Academic Teaching Hospitals you need to send the following documents to the Office of the Dean of Studies (pj.m3@uniklinik-freiburg.de):

• Proof of enrollment at the external university at the start of the Practical Year (PJ)
• Proof of occupational health examination, valid for the entire PJ and not older than two years
• Proof of measles vaccination, if not evident from the occupational health examination certificate
• Copy of the M2 certificate, which can be submitted up to one week before the start of the Practical Year, provided that the proof of passing (confirmation from the Dean’s Office or the State Examination Office about passing the M2) has been submitted beforehand

Students who are not enrolled in the Human Medicine programme at a German university cannot complete a Practical Year at the University Medical Center Freiburg or the Academic Teaching Hospitals. However, you are welcome to apply for a clinical traineeship and coordinate with your home university to determine if a traineeship is sufficient for recognition as part of your Practical Year.

Students from abroad must provide recognition of their studies by the Düsseldorf District Government and submit written proof of their German language skills, including grades.
