Curriculum Development

The Medical Faculty Freiburg surveys its graduates each year. These surveys are conducted in partnership with the Medical Faculty Ulm and are led by the Teaching Development Team at the Medical Faculty Freiburg for both the Freiburg and Ulm faculties.

Successful doctor-patient communication helps prevent issues or mistakes arising from misunderstandings and significantly enhances patient satisfaction, professional satisfaction, and treatment outcomes. It saves time and allows you to work together with patients to identify and carry out the optimal treatment.

Working together in clinical and healthcare settings naturally involves Interprofessional Collaboration. Throughout the degree program, further learning opportunities on Interprofessional Collaboration are continuously established, practice sessions intensified, and the topic of “interprofessionalism” is firmly integrated into the curriculum. The overall objective is that every student takes part in at least one interprofessional teaching event during their studies.

Medical didactics is the science and practice of teaching and learning in the medical field. It focuses on the development, design, and assessment of teaching methods and materials. The aim of medical didactics is to effectively transmit medical knowledge, clinical skills, and professional competencies, thus enhancing the training of doctors and healthcare professionals.

Medical didactics is part of the Teaching Development Team. Besides offering face-to-face and online seminars on medical didactics, we develop the e-learning platform “Inspiration Lehre.” This platform compiles and presents didactic materials on quality teaching and exam development. Our medical didactics consulting service also aims to support educators in resolving questions about their teaching in individual appointments and to inspire new ideas for better teaching.

Hands-on training is an essential part of medical studies. A coherent and well-integrated curriculum is key, along with structured opportunities to practice relevant skills. Practical skills teaching is firmly established within the subjects. The current focus lies on standardizing examination procedures used in Freiburg and further developing a systematic skills training program.

Physician training is also scientific training, enabling future doctors to practice based on scientific evidence and to conduct independent research. The ongoing curriculum development emphasizes evidence-based medicine and the teaching of core skills in scientific work.

The MERLIN collaborative project (Medical Education Research – Teaching Research Network Baden-Württemberg) was initiated by the Competence Network for Medical Education in Baden-Württemberg and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from 2012 to 2020 within the Quality Pact for Teaching.

The goal of the MERLIN collaborative project was to better align medical education content-wise and methodologically with the competencies required in medical and scientific professional practice and to develop the necessary patient-related teaching and examination formats. The Freiburg MERLIN research group focused on competency-based evaluation and quality management to steer development processes at the faculties.

Within the framework of the collaborative project, guidelines and materials were developed, among others, on topics such as graduate surveys, evaluations, and feedback.
