Research:

My research at the frontier between molecular physics and physical chemistry is focused on weakly-bound molecular complexes of small and medium sized molecules. Many molecular processes that are important for a broad range of scientific disciplines between biology, chemistry and physics are crucially dependent on the environment in which they typically occur. The limitation of these environments to just a few molecules in small complexes and clusters allows to apply gas phase spectroscopic techniques to observe molecular processes with a high level of detail and how they are affected by the environment that is added molecule by molecule.

The spectroscopic techniques used in my research span a wide variety of light sources ranging from the visible to the extreme ultraviolet, and from continuous radiation to pulsed sources with femtosecond time resolution. A special focus is on photoelectron and photoion spectroscopy with electron ion coincidence detection to obtain experimental data with molecular cluster size resolution. By using these techniques, I try to improve our understanding of how the first steps of condensation or solvation affect the electronic structure, joint nuclear and electronic dynamics, and photochemical reactions and relaxation processes.

The research is integrated in the following projects:

Spectroscopy of isolated chromophore ensembles

Interaction of XUV radiation with atoms, molecules and clusters

Time-resolved Photoelectron and Photoion Imaging of organic molecules and aggregates
