New junior research group on heart arrhythmia
As part of its special programme for international academic freedom, the Baden-Württemberg Foundation is funding an interdisciplinary research project led by Freiburg-based systems biologist Viviane Timmermann, who is working in the group of Prof. J. Timmer on data-based modelling of dynamic biological systems.

DFG extends research group “Reduction of the complexity of non-equilibrium systems”
Researchers from physics, materials science, and engineering work together in an interdisciplinary manner in DFG research group 5099. The team, led by spokesperson Prof. Dr. Gerhard Stock, will now receive funding for another four years.

Petri Käpylä Awarded ERC Advanced Grant
PD Dr. Petri Käpylä, lecturer at the University of Freiburg’s Institute of Physics, has received a grant worth 2.5 million euros from the European Research Council for his work at the Institute of Solar Physics (KIS) in Freiburg. In the ‘NeoCon’ project, Käpylä is focusing on convection, the fluid motions in the outer parts of the Sun.
Michael Moseler has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant
Prof. Dr. Michael Moseler, Professor for Simulation of Functional Nanosystems at the University of Freiburg, is receiving €2.5 million in funding from the European Research Council for his work at the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM. Moseler’s project is dedicated to researching and developing a digital twin for lubricants in highly loaded frictional contacts.

Breakthrough Prize in Physics for Large-Scale Experiments Including University of Freiburg Researchers
This year’s Breakthrough Prize in Physics has been awarded to four particle physics experiments at the CERN research centre in Geneva. Several University of Freiburg research groups were and still are closely involved in the design and operation of these large-scale experiments at the LHC particle accelerator.
