Library of the Institute of Physics
Physics Library in the basement of the Physics Westbuilding (Westbau)
Opening hours: Mon to Fri 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.
The library offers a wide range of specialist books and other academic literature. The facilities can also be used for study purposes.
The large reading and seminar room is equipped with a projector and screen and is suitable for small block seminars or conferences.

The institute’s common room is located on the 11th floor of the physics high-rise building
Opening hours: Mon to Fri 7am – 7pm
The Common Room is a meeting place for students as well as for all employees at the Physics Institute, and offers the opportunity for discussion in a relaxed atmosphere, e.g. for learning and exercise groups.
With a view over the entire city, the Black Forest and as far as the Kaiserstuhl, a meeting place for students and teachers of the Physics Institute was created.
In addition to many workspaces for collaborative learning and exchange, there is also a small cooking and washing-up area as well as a small coffee kitchen.
Multimedia Rooms
The physics west building contains two equipped multimedia rooms
The rooms are located on the 1st and 2nd floors of the physics west building and can be used for committee meetings, discussions, lectures and small seminars.
Multimedia Room 1 (Westbau 1. OG)
On the 1st floor of the Physics West Building (room 01 011) there is a multimedia room equipped with
- Telephone, flipchart, full-duplex speakerphone,
- approx. 12 seats (no whiteboard)
- Conference table with HDMI-VGA matrix switch and 230V Schuko power outlet
- 1 beamer (1920×1080) / 1 projection screen
- 1 LCD monitor 52″ (1920×1080)
- Motorized swivel and zoom webcam (1080p)
- Multimedia PC with video conferencing software: Skype, Vidyo, BlueJeans.
The multimedia room is suitable for video conferences, presentations or conference sessions, among other things.
Multimedia Room 2 (Westbau 2. OG)
On the 2nd floor of the Physics West Building (room 02 011) there is a multimedia room equipped with
- Conference table with network and power connections
- Whiteboard
- 1 TV
- Webcam
- Multimedia PC with connected Polycom VSX 7000e video conferencing system with webcam and 2 speakers; Skype is installed
The multimedia room is suitable for video conferences, presentations or conference sessions, among other things.

Parent-child room
In the basement of the Physics Westbuilding (Westbau)
The room is available to staff and students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics for childcare. It includes a parent-child area equipped with various games and children’s books. A changing table is provided, and toilets are located in the adjacent hallway.
Opening hours: Weekdays from 7 am to 8 pm
- In the parent-child room, the child is under the supervision of the attending adult. Please do not leave your child unattended in the parent-child room. This supervision requirement applies to the entire building.
- Children are not allowed in the laboratory areas of the Physics Institute under any circumstances, even when accompanied.
- The University of Freiburg is not liable for damages resulting from a breach of supervisory duties. This also applies to damage to facilities and property caused by a child. Any damage must be reported immediately to:

The parent-child room may not be used if the child being cared for is suffering from a contagious disease as defined in Section 34 Paragraph 5 Sentence 2 of the Infection Protection Act, such as chickenpox, mumps, measles, scarlet fever, lice, scabies, diarrhea, and/or fever.
- Users of the room are responsible for the proper care of the furnishings and equipment. No items may be removed from the rooms. The rooms must be tidied and left clean after use.
- A changing table is available; toilets are located in the adjacent hallway.
