Particles, Fields, Cosmos

The institute comprises strong and internationally recognized research groups in the field of experimental and theoretical particle physics. The experimental groups’ research program focuses on experiments at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. Through their significant involvement in the ATLAS experiment, physicists from the institute made substantial contributions to the discovery of the Higgs boson. At the LHCb experiment, the focus is on investigating matter-antimatter differences. Another research activity is the direct search for dark matter. All experimental groups are also at the forefront of developing new detector technologies. Activities in theoretical particle physics include precision studies of the strong and electroweak interactions, quantum field theory, the exploration of potential model extensions with new theoretical structures, and astroparticle physics.
