Things to Know Before You Apply

Before beginning your application, it is useful to be aware of a few important aspects of studying in Germany. These are not steps you need to complete right away, but understanding them early will help you plan realistically and avoid unnecessary delays later on.

Financial Proof (Blocked Account)

International non-EU students who do not have a scholarship are often required by the German Embassy to provide proof of sufficient financial resources for living expenses. In most cases, this is done by opening a blocked account (“Sperrkonto”). Since the setup and transfer process can take time, it is worth knowing about the requirements and providers in advance. This way, you’ll be prepared to act quickly once you have your admission letter.

For detailed information on blocked accounts and available providers, please consult this resource.

Visa Regulations

Visa requirements vary depending on nationality:

  • Students from the EU, EEA countries, Switzerland, and certain other states (e.g., USA, Canada, Australia, Japan) can usually enter Germany without a visa and apply for a residence permit after arrival.
  • Some nationalities may also enter without a visa if they do not plan to work in Germany.
  • All other students must apply for a student visa before traveling to Germany.

Visa appointments can be difficult to obtain and processing times may be long. Therefore, it is important to familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to your country well in advance. Check the website of your local German embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date information and required documents. A full list of German missions abroad can be found here.

We strongly recommend that you book an appointment as early as possible. If your embassy allows you to reserve a slot without yet presenting your official admission letter, it is advisable to do so immediately — even before you receive the letter.

Important: Do not enter Germany on a tourist visa if you intend to study, as it cannot be converted into a student visa.
