Transformational Sustainability Science Group
The group advances transformational sustainability science through the following activity domains:
- Building theory and particularly methodology of transformational sustainability science
- Synthesizing foundational work on transformational sustainability science into accessible formats
- Developing sustainability education and training programs
- Conducting empirical transformational sustainability research (particularly field experiments)

The Transformational Sustainability Science Group was founded at the University of Freiburg in 2024 with funding from the Humboldt Foundation through the Humboldt Professorship for Sustainable Food Economy.

Team
The Transformational Sustainability Science Group is an interdisciplinary group, with the core team being trained in transformational sustainability science. Members of the TSS Group have contributed to the evolution of sustainability science since its inception in the early 2000s.
Education & Training
The Group designs and delivers programs that equip researchers and practitioners with procedures and skills to co-produce knowledge for sustainability solutions to pressing problems, using pedagogies that are solutions-oriented, competency-based, and project-focused.

Our research activities focus on advancing the theory, practice of transformational sustainability research & education.
Publications
The publications of the Transformational Sustainability Science Group cover three areas: theory and methods for transformational sustainability science; solutions-oriented and competency-based learning in sustainability education; and mechanisms for change, such as crises, as opportunities for sustainability. In each area, we present the literature along an underpinning framework.
