W3-Professorship in Business Taxation
The University of Freiburg is well worth considering: with a history spanning over 500 years, it is one of Germany’s most prestigious and research-intensive universities. Here, you’ll work in a uniquely diverse range of disciplines, perspectives, and people, engaged in research and teaching at the highest level—right in the heart of one of Germany’s most popular cities.
The personnel policy of the University of Freiburg is guided by the principles of equality and diversity. The university is strongly committed to the goal of being a family-friendly institution.
A W3 professorship in Business Taxation (successor to W. Kessler) is to be filled at the Faculty of Economics and Behavioural Sciences in the Department of Economics, effective April 1, 2026.
This professorship is particularly suited for early-career researchers.
The professorship is intended to represent the field of “Business Taxation” in both research and teaching.
The future holder of this position is expected to publish high-quality work—both in terms of scope and academic rigor—in leading national and international journals and commentaries in the field of business taxation, and to contribute to relevant academic research projects. Methodologically, a mix of normative-deductive and positive tax theory, economic analysis of the law, and empirical tax research methods is desirable. The candidate’s engagement with forward-looking, practice-relevant research questions—such as the digital transformation in tax law, the integration of sustainability dimensions (e.g., intergenerational justice, environmental and climate protection) into tax theory, international tax law, corporate tax law, and the law of nonprofit organizations—is welcomed. Having passed the tax advisor examination is an advantage but not required.
In terms of teaching, the professorship is responsible for the field of business taxation in the undergraduate and graduate economics programs. In addition, courses and seminars are to be offered to students in the Faculty of Law. In addition to introductory lectures, the teaching also includes advanced modules, which are conducted in both German and English. Consequently, the future holder of this position should have extensive and relevant teaching experience. In addition to traditional in-person teaching methods, innovative and novel teaching concepts (e.g., e-learning) should also be utilized to expand the target audience and scope of influence. The future incumbent is expected to actively participate in existing collaborations within and outside the Faculty of Economies and to (further) develop innovative, interdisciplinary course content and areas of specialization at the “Center for Business and Law.” This also includes overseeing the existing continuing education programs (Master of Arts in Taxation, MBA in International Taxation).
In addition to the general civil service requirements, the qualifications for professors include a completed university degree, teaching aptitude, and an outstanding doctoral dissertation. Academic achievements beyond the doctoral level, typically demonstrated by a habilitation, are expected (§ 47 of the State Higher Education Act (LHG)).
For the position advertised here, we particularly welcome applications from women.
