“Welcome to our university. I am pleased that you can use this reception to network with each other, but also that we are opening up this space for your feedback.”

Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein

Rector, Universität Freiburg

How are the new professors finding their start at the University of Freiburg? What ideas and suggestions do they have? Where is there room for improvement? The participants discussed these questions with the University management, covering topics such as digitalisation, internationalisation and interdisciplinary cooperation.

Cooperative environment and interdisciplinary research

Many of the professors emphasised their previous experiences at the University, particularly the cooperative environment and the opportunity to work with other faculties on an interdisciplinary basis.

‘I really appreciate the collegial atmosphere and I find the mentality in Freiburg very congenial. I felt right at home here at the University, said Prof. Dr Kerstin Hockmann, who has held the Chair of Applied Geochemistry since August 2024.

Prof. Dr. Alexis Fritz, who has held the Chair of Moral Theology since October 2024, emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary research: “It is a great honour for me to have been appointed to such a renowned university. As a moral theologian, I am very interested in working across disciplines, for example on the topics of health, ethics and digitalisation.”

After a tour of the Uniseum, representatives of the Association of Friends of Freiburg University, the Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft (Scientific Society Freiburg) and the Alumni Association welcomed the newly appointed professors with a drink in the historic cellar of the Uniseum.

Onboarding for new employees at the University of Freiburg

“I am pleased that the new version of the reception was so well received. It is important to us that our new professors feel comfortable from the start and we work to ensure that they receive all the information and support they need. To this end, we are continuously expanding our onboarding programme for academics,” says Dr Marco Tomaszewski from the Academic Personnel Development team.
