The Future Forests Cluster of Excellence at the University of Freiburg is an interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to issues of adaptation and transformation of forests and their societal use in the face of global change. Future-oriented research on the complex interactions between forests and society is funded here by the German Research Foundation and the Eva Mayr Stihl Foundation with outstanding international visibility. Future Forests brings together more than 50 scientists from four faculties and non-university partner institutions.
The International Forest Adaptation Lab (IFAL) is the central structure of the cluster for supporting international cooperation and internationalisation. The primary goal of IFAL is to initiate and promote a global network for research in the field of adaptation of socio-ecological forest systems. As coordinator, you will be responsible for establishing and coordinating this network as well as planning and implementing IFAL's activities. In your position, you will expand the international visibility of the cluster.
Your tasks will include:
- Developing and implementing a Future Forests internationalisation strategy
- Strengthening exchange with international cooperation partners: identifying research partners, organising research stays for external and internal scientists
- Coordinating communication between the cluster and international research partners
- Supporting the IFAL steering committee
- Onboarding international visiting scientists; facilitating access to Future Forests' research infrastructure
- Supporting the design and development of research approaches and standards for research on socio-ecological forest systems in collaboration with international cooperation partners
- Facilitation of the exchange of data on socio-ecological forest systems from different regions of the world for the purpose of joint synthesis work
- Preparation and implementation of international summer schools, workshops and other joint events
- Supporting international exchange in teaching and the joint development of curricula and master's labs in cooperation with the Future Forests Academy
- The coordinator works closely with the general management, the steering board, the cluster spokespersons, the Future Forests Academy and the Social-Ecological Systems CaseLab. The position is part of a pool of central functional positions and is based at the administrative office.
Your profile
- You have a university degree and ideally a doctorate in forestry, environmental or sustainability sciences or a related subject
- You have in-depth knowledge and experience in the fields of forest management, forest policy and socio-ecological systems, including at the international level.
- You have experience in coordinating and, ideally, establishing (international) research networks.
- You have practical experience in independently organising international events and workshops.
- You are proficient in Office applications and common content management systems.
- You are a team player with strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently.
- You are willing to undertake extended international business trips.
- You have very good written and spoken German and English skills
